A communication mat for SEN children is a visual support tool designed to aid communication and language development for students with diverse communication needs. This mat is for children to communicate how they are feeling. It shows a grid of pictures and words for children to point to. Why do you need this? If a child has limited verbal communication skills, it can be challenging for them to express their thoughts, feelings, or needs verbally. A communication mat provides alternative means of communication, allowing the child to convey how they feel using visual symbols or pictures.
